OUR STAY AT SHANGRI-LA RESORT IN MAURITIUS + review
Do you have a picture in your head when you think of paradise? Sure we all have. The white sandy beaches and blue skies for sure with different areas to relax in at different times of the day, palm-fringe beach, excellent service, and amazing food. If you are like me you might have already created a dream list of the kind you’d want from a honeymoon or even a vacation trip with your loved one.
Actually, what we wanted on this trip was a combination of relaxing and adventure. The best thing we did was to split the days and stays into different islands. Our first stop on our 7-day honeymoon trip was Trou d’Eau Douce Island and we stayed at the Shangri-La Resort in Mauritius, Trou d’Eau Douce Island, was the first stop of our 7-Day Itinerary in Mauritius.
ABOUT THE HOTEL
Shangri La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa. The resort, Le Touessrok is one of the most famous institutions in Mauritius. The Shangri La group, known for their luxury, took over the hotel a couple of years back and have given the resort a multi-million dollar makeover. If you are looking for honeymoon inspiration in the Indian Ocean you’re in for a treat today!
As soon as we entered the Shangri-La’s property, we knew that we made the right choice of hotel. It’s a 5-minute drive from the property main entrance to the hotel. While driving, very green scenery greeted us. We were amazed by the service the moment we arrived. The receptionist was waiting for us, the luggage tag with our name was ready, things like these make you feel that the hotel has a high service standard. I guess the guard from the main entrance communicated our arrival to the main reception, that’s how they knew our name.
They took us to the welcome area and we were handed tropical drinks with a frangipani flower poking out of the straw and cold frangipani scented towels while the receptionist was taking care of the check-in process.
There are three wings in this resort
Frangipani Wing- A luxurious resort-style nestled on their own islet with exclusive “adults only” pool. Free cocktails every day by the Republic Beach & Grill from 5:30pm to 6:30pm are offered to those who stay in this wing.
Hibiscus Wing- elegant rooms situated close to the main beach at the heart of the resort. Here is where you can find water sports activities.
Coral Wing- chic room, overlooking the sparkling Indian Ocean. From here you can see the view of the nearby island called Ilot Mangenie (which I will talk about more below).
THE ROOM AND VIEW
We got the Junior Suite Frangipani Ocean View Frangipani wing which felt like an exclusive private island within the resort. You have an exclusive swimming pool without children. You will receive a premier experience, including chilled champagne on arrival and gifts, a daily à la carte breakfast at Republik Beach Club & Grill, daily sunset cocktails and a complimentary mini-bar that is restocked daily with selected beverages.
If you want to see more about the room and the resort, you can watch my Youtube video below.
Our Frangipani suite had the dreamiest view. We got uninterrupted ocean views in our room, situated on a secluded islet, which is separated from the main resort is accessible by bridge.
THE AMENITIES & SERVICE
There were many water sports activities offered every day, the non-motorized water activities are free. We had the best time trying most of them. The staff are very nice and always greet you with their big smile. They have two big swimming pools, one in Frangipani wing, and the other in Hibiscus wing where children are allowed.
There are plenty of cabanas and beds around the resort with clean towels ready. The staff, as soon as they see you arriving on the beds, they bring you an icebox with free water bottles and cold face towels in it. We were spoiled with their impeccable service!
Amazingly, every day you could have a different view of this resort without getting bored. Some are wide open beaches, some more like hidden coves, and some even on a private island which is a boat ride away. You can take pictures of the different angles of the resort.
A free evening sundowner cocktail on the beachside, you can have free drinks as the sun goes down and the lights turn on while listening to music.
For dining they have quite a few restaurants available. SAFRAN- Indian & Mauritian delicacies, KUSHI-fine Oriental dishes, LE BAZAR- an International cuisine with twist of Asian, THE REPUBLIK BEACH & GRILL (yes, they served oysters) and ILOT MANGENIE. Things to note: Dress code; they are quite strict on the evening dress code for men. Long trousers and closed shoes are a must and the restaurant must be booked in advance.
For breakfast, you’ve got a choice of the main buffet at Le Bazar which has everything you could ever imagine and an a la carte menu at the Republik if you are staying in the Frangipani Wing. We are not a big fan of buffet, so we took the a la carte breakfast, where it felt more relaxed.
Shall I continue? I am completely oversharing, but can you ever have too many beach photos? It’s my treat, so shall we???
Ilot Mangenie, a jetty-ride away that is exclusive to guests staying at the Shangri-La Resort in Mauritius, next to Ile Aux Cerfs, which was our next destination, I made a separate post about our experience in Bubble Lodge Ile Aux Cerfs. Shuttle boats are available every half an hour throughout the day and the last trip from Ilot Mangenie is at 4pm.
It was about a 10-minute ride with amazing views back to the resort and across the island. When you arrive you will be greeted by the butler for the day with his big smile and will hand you the cold frangipani scented towels.
We ordered the most raving truffle pizza, I must say it was one of the best pizzas we’ve ever had. A must try!
We spent our afternoon on the sun lounger, the same service you will receive, they will bring you an icebox with water bottles and cold face towels in it. It was like you went on another vacation in this islet.
When the sun is about to set, it means it’s time to go back to the main resort, as we continue to our next journey.
